00:04:43 Chris Taylor: Welcome to all members and guests! Want to join the OPCUG? - https://opcug.ca/join-or-renew/ Want to present at Q&A? Give us your material and we can create slides, or we have a PowerPoint template you can download and use: https://opcug.ca/downloads/Q&A-Template.potx Send in questions, shares, etc SuggestionBox@opcug.ca 00:05:28 Micheline: Is anyone interested enough in MetaLenses, either with a knowledge of optics and semiconductor technology and an interest in photography, or willing to read-up about them, willing to do a presentation on Metalenses, or a series of mini-presentations on them in Q&A? Metalenses would seem to have great potential in laptops, tablets and cell-phones, and even telescopes. They are not much thicker than the sensor on which they are mounted, and can be adjusted without any moving parts. As I understand them, they focus by interference rather by refraction (as glass lenses do). Lens maker Canon has already started making them - see articles posted on this topic on the Member Forum. 00:08:11 E O'Driscoll: A few days ago I complained that my cable internet wifi was dropping. FYI, I haven't had a drop since I connected via Ethernet cable. So I am going to go back to my ISP (NCF) with this info. I see that we have an ask on this tonight. Any ideas will be welcome. 00:09:07 Alan German (Treasurer): @Elizabeth - Have you moved your router or is anything new its vicinity? 00:14:49 Micheline: How ddo I swwwwwwwitch OFF the list of participant above the chat? 00:17:08 Chris Taylor: Backup software https://www.lifewire.com/free-backup-software-tools-2617964 Paul Thurrott on setting up Windows https://www.thurrott.com/books/windows-11-field-guide/install-windows-11/291479/ overcome-windows-setup-annoyances 00:18:48 Bob Herres: I use your blocker Chris Mine works fine for many videos 00:19:08 tom: Use a separate browser for Youtube & just reopen, don't log in 00:19:18 tom: Enhancer for Youtube extension also blocks 00:19:46 Micheline: JohnG - the x in the upper top right corner closes the zoom on my computer 00:19:54 Timothy: Wouldn't clearing the cookies fix the problem? 00:20:24 Chris Taylor: murf.ai 00:22:15 Chris Taylor: Photo Stamp Remover https://sharewareonsale.com/s/softorbits-photo-stamp-remover-sale 00:28:44 Chris Taylor: Biometric authentication https://mobilesyrup.com/2023/10/12/privacy-commissioner-feedback-on-biometrics-guidance/ https://bluink.ca/ https://bluink.ca/blog/ https://www.facebook.com/BluinkLtd https://www.biometricupdate.com/ 00:30:13 E O'Driscoll: @Alan - I have not moved the router/modem. I just went out and bought a 40' Ethernet cable so that I could start the exploration process for the problem. I need to move back to wifi though. 00:31:09 Alan German (Treasurer): @Elizabeth - I was wondering if the router's environment has changed reducing the signal level 00:31:25 E O'Driscoll: @Alan nope. 00:34:05 Bill: Thanks Stew. 00:34:25 Jeff (JEFFRO) Dubois: bluink… not to be confused with bluelink which is Hyundai's remote app to start, stop, lock, unlock and track your vehicle. :-) 00:34:49 Timothy: I've been having dropouts for about 2 months now with Rogers. 00:35:18 Ed Morawski: What time of the day does the connection drop? 00:35:20 tom: Wired best. Can usually choose best wifi channel 00:35:22 Alan German (Treasurer): @Tim - How frequently are the drops? 00:36:57 tom: https://www.comparitech.com/net-admin/wifi-analyzers/ 00:38:55 tom: Also, switch bands 00:38:58 Tristan: If have a splitter for multiple cable outlets in the house, that can potentially also cause issues. 00:39:08 tom: %ghz, 6Ghz has less interference 00:39:13 tom: but shorter range 00:39:19 tom: 5Ghz 00:39:26 Timothy: Mine has dropped at all hours. 00:39:27 Jeff (JEFFRO) Dubois: What other devices are connected when the wireless connection drops? 00:39:40 tom: Even moving router 90 degrees may help 00:39:41 Stew Bruce: One thing to check if possible, make & model # of the router to see if it even still supported. 00:40:38 Dao: There are also companies who throttle your signal. I quit a b2b2c for that reason: they boosted my signal on my request, but then it dropped down a few days later again. 00:40:51 Dao: Replying to "Backup software http..." Serge-Érik here on Dao's computer tonight… About backup software on the list, a word of caution about GFI Backup, it caused major problems on my PC many years back (2009), due to a vulnerability and/or other issues. It may not be the case anymore, but who knows, It was also a pain in the neck to uninstall it afterwards (https://www.revouninstaller.com/preview-log/?pid=5166&pname=GFI+Backup+Freeware). 00:42:44 Jocelyn Doire: Got problems with TV with Rogers, it seems that Rogers is upgrading their network, it happens in periods, at the moments it's stable, their customer service does not seems to be informed when that happens. On the side of the road there was a Rogers panel that says they are working and apologise for inconvenience. 00:42:53 tom: Analyzer programs available for all computers/phones 00:44:57 Jeff (JEFFRO) Dubois: Could be a JavaScript false message left in the browser. I'd run a full free online ESET scan to see if it finds anything. (That's for Nicholas) 00:45:01 tom: https://www.comparitech.com/net-admin/wifi-analyzers/ 00:45:09 Bill: A good suggestion Tom. 00:45:24 Dao: Bell does no longer support emails as of last year. If you had one before, it should still work. Info is in the account somewhere. 00:46:06 Timothy: That story was on Market PLace. 00:46:11 tom: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/computer-keeps-locking-automatically/c77139c2-ebab-4865-b941-96987f81cf67 00:46:35 tom: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%22locking%22+message+browser&atb=v342-1&ia=web 00:46:52 E O'Driscoll: @Tom thanks for thw analyzer info. 00:47:59 E O'Driscoll: I saw the CBC Marketplace show. One of the shops erased evidence that they opened files. 00:48:03 tom: Bell gave me a email address - vp-it@bell.net ! 00:48:10 Chris Taylor: PeaZip https://peazip.github.io 00:49:01 Bill: I use a tablet for everything. I store everything on a sd card. If it goes anywhere, I ALWAYS take the sd card OUT. 00:49:29 Bob Herres: Reacted to "I use a tablet for e..." with ❤️ 00:49:32 Stew Bruce: Replying to "I use a tablet for e..." 👍 00:49:46 Chris Taylor: Bill - SD cards are notoriously unreliable. Make sure you have all your data in at least 2 places! 00:50:23 tom: You can create an archive with 7-zip with a password 00:51:13 tom: I suggest the 7z format, rather than ZIP - i have read that ZIP file encryption is not very good 00:51:24 Chris Taylor: Most ZIP-type programs allow you to encrypt the files. 00:51:55 Bill: Thanks Chris. I have my data backed up in 3 different places. I Just take it out if someone else has it. 00:52:18 Chris Taylor: Not a bad way of doing things! 00:52:21 E O'Driscoll: 😀 00:52:59 Chris Taylor: Fix Revolution fixrevolution.ca 00:58:02 Michelle Faber: I used Fix Revolution a few times. The cae wen tget said they would. My tablet was returned at the time they said it would be fixed. They changed the battery. No surprise in terms of price. 00:58:10 Dao: Replying to "Bell does no longer ..." Multiple emails that is, so, if it is an extra email, it may stop working. 00:58:26 Stew Bruce: Actually, I think I'll pass this on to my parents :) 00:59:04 E O'Driscoll: Very interesting about Fixrevolution. I wonder if they fix a Bose 3-cd changer? I'll ask them. 00:59:49 E O'Driscoll: Whose house is that? 01:00:06 tom: Cost? 01:00:15 Ed Morawski: SO how much was it? 01:01:21 Ed Morawski: 👍🏻 01:02:28 Alan German (Treasurer): Are there any other questions or shares? We are almost at the "last ten"!!! 01:02:47 tom: DNS holds IPs, not sites. Some hosting providers serve multiple URLS thru 1 IP 01:04:04 tom: DNS is also flued when restarting 01:04:13 tom: flushed 01:06:45 Timothy: That repair shop story had mentioned that some looked up the web sites history.. 01:08:04 Stew Bruce: Did anyone read about the new Tensor 3 and the fact it was offloading processing to Google servers rather than on device processing? 01:08:20 Bill: Thanks everyone. Most interesting night. 01:09:24 Micheline: How do police check your computer history? 01:12:38 Ed Morawski: oh, no... 01:12:57 Ed Morawski: so annoying.. 01:15:42 Michelle Faber: Thank you. Have a nice evening. 01:15:56 Jeff (JEFFRO) Dubois: Tanks everyone. Have a good night. 01:16:13 Gail: Thank you to all presenters 01:16:21 E O'Driscoll: Great Q&A tonight, as usual!❤️
