00:04:54 Micheline: My Win 11 would not open this evening - it just showed the Windows background pattern, even after repeatedly rebooting. I finally got it going by removing the charging cable. 00:06:49 Micheline: Now my Win 11 laptop has a new icon - Copilot preview, in the Taskbar 00:07:22 Michelle Faber: Happy New Year to OPCUG members 00:08:49 Alan German (Treasurer): Free Membership in OPCUG! If you are currently an OPCUG member, there is no need to pay to renew your membership for another whole year. As has been done for several years, the Board of Directors has once again decided to waive membership renewal fees, and this will apply to all members in good standing as of April 1, 2024. So, don’t send us any money. Your next membership year is absolutely free. This also means a return of our two-for-one offer for new members. Anyone purchasing a new membership from now until March 31st will buy a one-year membership. So, for example, a membership purchased on December 24, 2023 will provide membership until December 24, 2024. But, because this new member will be in good standing on April 1st (this is NOT an April Fool’s joke!) their membership will automatically be renewed until December 24, 2025. Hence, two years for the price of one! 00:09:51 Sherida Harris: What is OPCUG 00:10:17 Alan German (Treasurer): OPCUG = Ottawa PC Users' Group (i.e. us!) 00:10:38 Tom Trottier: I have the same problem - video, mike not working 00:11:29 Jocelyn Doire: Alt-V should start/stop the video 00:11:30 Tom Trottier: Zoom told me it updated 00:12:25 Mark Cayer: Got video but no audio. Is everyone muted?? 00:13:41 Alan German (Treasurer): Mark - Not muted - yet! 00:14:07 Chris Taylor, President: Mark no nobody is muted yet 00:14:08 Tom Trottier: ANSWER: you have to click the OK at the top agreeing to the recording 00:14:14 Tom Trottier: top of gallery 00:14:34 Tom Trottier: otherwise Unumute & Start video don't work 00:15:08 Timothy: we now have 60. 00:15:57 Jocelyn Doire: now 62, I wonder if that's a record. 00:16:48 Tom Trottier: 67 00:18:01 Tom Trottier: "Before able to turn on video/audio, you have to respond to the recording disclaimer which is now moved to the top of the meeting window since 5.17.1. Otherwise, your attempts to turn on video/audio will be ignored." -- https://community.zoom.com/t5/Meetings/cannot-unmute-or-turn-on-video-when-meeting-is-recorded/m-p/159910 00:18:12 Chris Taylor, President: Tom, and growing. We provide links to official websites that show the numerous ways online thieves are trying to steal your money and/or identity, and websites that can help you prevent fraud or coach you if you become a victim. Check out the latest scams below (updated January 10, 2024) 00:33:42 Tom Trottier: I recall some "CRA" threats by phone 00:35:16 Timothy: and IRS as well. 00:36:18 Tom Trottier: Cheques may appear to be "certified" - but fale! 00:36:23 Tom Trottier: fake 00:36:39 Tom Trottier: fail 00:37:07 Coreen: Money draft or certified cheque 00:37:25 Alan German (Treasurer): Note that hyperlinks that are displayed may be different from the address they are actually pointing to. Hover the mouse over the link and see what the linked address actually is. 00:38:18 Ed Morawski: This is a great idea! 00:38:45 K WG: Super!! Thank you for that initiative! 00:38:46 Chris Taylor, President: https://www.ottawapolice.ca/en/community-safety-and-crime-prevention/safe-trade-zones.aspx 00:38:50 Natalie: Or can meet at a public parking lot/location 00:38:59 Tom Trottier: An armed police may not have much fear in a personal transaction... 00:41:00 Darlene: Fraud at the institutional level is becoming increasingly common...for example, the Toronto Library, Hospitals, and sensitive information breaches at Banks. We become victims through this type of fraud. It happened to me because I was listed on one of my mother's bank accounts. Now I have credit monitoring paid for by that institution, but that is less than satisfying. 00:41:52 Jeff (JEFFRO) Dubois: One of the simplest fraud prevention steps you can take is to NOT have a listed phone number. Years ago when I had the phone installed at the cottage I discovered two things. First, there was a $4 monthly fee to have an unlisted number and second, that you did not have to have the phone listed under your own named. Our phone at the cottage is listed under the name Bob Loblaw. Ironically, baw blaw blaw is exactly who telemarketers and fraudsters ask to talk to so as soon as they ask for Bob Loblaw we know it's a spoof call. 00:43:37 Chris Taylor, President: I get the Microsoft technician fraud calls on a regular basis. Until I stopped answering the phone and set my voice message to "Due to amount of fraud calls, I don't answer my phone. If you are not a fraudster, leave your name and number and if I believe you, I will call you back." Fraudsters never leave a message. 00:45:13 Alan German (Treasurer): I only answer calls from known contacts on call display. I don't return calls to Chinese speakers on voicemail! 00:45:46 Harvey Hope: I have had clients call the "Microsoft" technician and allowed access to their computer. Some clients have lost money and their computer has active remote access software remaining. 00:46:26 Ed Morawski: My own elderly parents nearly fell for that. Fortunately, their bank recognized the situation on immediately and intervened successfully. 00:46:47 Coreen: When they go to get cash from a bank will the Bank ask questions? 00:46:48 Chris Taylor, President: To combat grandparent scam, I have heard of a tip - give all your loved ones a code word they must use if they are ever in trouble. 00:47:19 Tom Trottier: There are also scams to get people to be money mules... 00:47:44 Tom Trottier: you can make a profit from these.... and go to prison 00:49:50 Jocelyn Doire: Ed, Coreen, my father also nearly got trapped, fortunately the bank teller asked questions and stopped it, but now bank are pushing them to use online services, unfortunately loosing one source of protection. 00:52:10 Coreen: Now you can put a hold on your card thru a mobile app. 00:52:17 Chris Taylor, President: You have the number to call back on the back of your credit card. I had this just the other day about a fraudulent charge on my card. Took me just an extra 2 minutes to call them back. 00:52:22 Tom Trottier: Scammer? Telemarketer? Talk a little, then "wait a moment" & put down the phone & forget for an hour... 00:52:34 Natalie: We are often asked to confirm info, so it can be easy for scammers to get it without the person thinking before it's too late. 00:54:38 Coreen: This happened a lot after the derecho in 2022. 00:55:15 Sherida Harris: My credit union has recommended you set up your online access as a 'favourite' and only use thhat way you never are tempted to click on a link that is presented in an email. Good advice for credit card accounts as well. 00:56:23 Coreen: what gets me they want cash and therefore do not pay taxes. 00:57:20 Jocelyn Doire: As a business I had a customer call me to verify if I was legit, that got into a very uncomfortable discussion, not being sure if they were a scammer or not, it's not easy to prove that both parties are legit at the beginning. 00:58:05 Coreen: People are stealing from carts at the grocery store and dollarama. 00:58:30 Harvey Hope: Using Google to search for services, etc may yield compromised web pages that direct you to a scam environment. Always type in the actual web site, do not use the Google link. 00:58:54 Natalie: My insurance company offers coverage for identity theft. You can't get the info back, but they offer help to get things sorted. 00:59:59 Coreen: Once a year when doing your income taxes check your credit rating and review your will too! 01:01:46 Jocelyn Doire: Nathalie, Insurance company are happy to get your money, but has anyone to use that coverage and were you happy with it? 01:02:36 Natalie: I haven't had ti use the insurance coverage, but the fee is really low. 01:02:40 Darlene: In the breach at my mother's credit union, I received only 2 years of credit monitoring, set to expire later this year. 01:02:42 Coreen: Identity theft happened at Queensway Carleton Hospital. 01:02:43 Tristan: I'm still shocked most of the Canadian banks don't give an option for using standard two factor authentication Apps for their online banking. 01:03:22 Darlene: My stolen information at the credit union was really unlucky. 01:03:29 Coreen: I just got a text that a parcel could not be delivered by Canada Post. 01:04:02 Darlene: I had never done any banking whatsoever at my mother's institution, she wanted me to be listed on her account when she became ill. 01:04:19 Michele Le Saux: Scams are also coming by text ...for example from Amazon or a delivery service 01:04:33 K WG: Are the advances in AI introducing any new things to be aware of? 01:05:55 Natalie: There has been info about personal cheque "washing" where scammers change the info written on it. One recommendation is to use gel ink (hard to wash off the cheque). 01:06:59 Jocelyn Doire: What you can be done if movers/tow truck/others black mail you to pay more to get your stuff? Will the police intervene if you are into such a situation? And what can be done after you've paid them? Is the law and enforcement progressing to block that? 01:08:33 Kirsten Fleming: Asking unsolicited a couple of drive way paving hucksters with a good deal for proof of public liability insurance and workers compensation coverage scared them off. They did'n come back. 01:08:56 Natalie: Is there a specific number of reports, or time frame for scams to be shared with the public (via news outlets, etc.)? I know someone who was a victim of a increasingly fraud that was only made public much later. 01:16:07 Natalie: If we want to recommend this presentation to another group, what's the process? 01:16:52 Maureen Carney: Why can you NOT go to the Police Station direct? 01:17:43 Timothy: I had money taken years ago via the ATM scan fraud. I did get the money back. 01:21:01 Emily: Replying to "I had money taken ye..." We get calls from numbers we do not know. Should we answer these calls. 01:21:20 Tom Trottier: Can the RCMP retrieve cyber payments? 01:21:46 Darlene: I never accept calls I don't know. I always assume they will call me back if they need to speak to me. 01:22:00 K WG: Can you clarify if it is a crime to call and solicit if a person is on the no call list? 01:22:15 Tom Trottier: Google Pixel can answer calls live - you see the transcript 01:23:08 Tom Trottier: They do fake 613 area code 01:23:41 Tom Trottier: "wait a moment" & put phone down.... 01:26:00 K WG: I have an unlisted number. I get that message about authenticating myself when calling people with Bell and Rogers services 01:26:15 Maureen Carney: I never answer calls from phone numbers I do not recognize…if it is a friend they will leave a message. 01:26:47 Tom Trottier: Can Mr. Leman forward the slides to OPCUG? 01:26:53 K WG: Recommend reading fine print on insurance coverage. May not be as good as it sounds or have limited $ value compensation. 01:26:55 Tom Trottier: Lemay 01:27:42 Alan German (Treasurer): We will post (a version of) the deck to our web site in a day or two. 01:28:05 Tom Trottier: Next - automatic AI scamming.... 01:28:30 Harvey Hope: Our home phone is thru magicJack and never receive scam phone calls ... and the price is right. 01:28:50 Tom Trottier: Fongo is free - & no spams 01:29:21 Tom Trottier: except a chat message every 2 weeks or so 01:29:45 Tom Trottier: Add a "0" Chris 01:32:44 Tom Trottier: Does it help if you tell the police you have a firearm? 01:33:23 Seb Lemay (Ottawa Police): lemays@ottawapolice.ca 01:34:28 Tom Trottier: If international, cannot be enforced 01:34:55 Bob Walker: The 'Don't call list' is the scammer's phone book 01:35:41 Tom Trottier: https://lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/index-eng 01:35:59 Alan German (Treasurer): Next Wednesday Our next Q&A session will commence at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, January 17th.
