My older son was upgrading and felt we should furthen our education. It is very interesting. 00:26:06 Mark Cayer: I quickly learned that if I was going to format an external disk to be used on both MAC and a Microsoft computer it was best to format it on the MAC. 00:27:14 Alan German: @Mark What filesystem format(s) can you use? 00:27:54 Chris Taylor: @Mark - what sort of problems did you have with formatting on the PC? Was it strictly a format problem (i.e. formatting an external hard drive as NTFS) 00:35:24 Mark Cayer: I found that when I formatted a unit under Windows to be ExFat for some reason the device was internally identified as Fat and Windows would look at the device size and recognize it should be ExFat. The MAC would not see the device properly and would open the device as Read Only. In order to fix that I had to use a command set to unmount the device and then mount it again with a Mount_Exfat command 00:39:21 Alan German: Does Time Machine backup the entire system - OS +apps + data? 00:40:18 Chris Taylor: Alan - everything! And you can easily restore the entire computer - if needed - by booting to the Time Machine drive. And no problem restoring to a different computer. 00:44:01 Tom Trottier: Is it easy to upgrade SSD, memory? 00:46:08 Bill: Thanks Gillian...very interesting indeed. 00:47:06 Alan German: How frequently does Apple provide updates to the operating system? Do you have control over when a restart will occur? 00:47:36 Tom Trottier: Have you ever installed any Linux programs? 00:50:41 Edward Morawski: Personally I disable automatic app restarts on crash/reboot to avoid the possibility that what crashed the CP might quickly crash it again. 00:52:29 Mark Cayer: My MAC Mini is a 2012 model and still kicking!! 00:53:13 Alan German: @Mark Does the OS have an end of life? 00:54:29 Mark Cayer: Can you put the dock on the side of the screen as opposed to always having it at the bottom?? 00:56:05 Mark Cayer: It is currently running MAC OS Sierra (V 10.12.6) 01:08:48 Alan German: Does the MacBook allow the use of multiple displays, e.g. extended desktop? 01:10:54 Tristan: https://endoflife.date/macos 01:11:32 Allison: We had an iMac which we got in 2008 and my son was still using it in 2020.
