What do we do?

Tux Members of the Linux Free and Open-Source Software Special Interest Group (Linux SIG for short) meet to discuss issues related to the Linux operating system, its associated applications, and other items of free and open-source software.

Some past meetings have featured the Ubuntu Linux distro (Jaunty Jackalope), using Samba to share files between Linux and Windows computers on a local area network, and running Wine to let Windows' programs run under Linux.

OPCUG's Linux SIG meets at 9:00 pm, normally on the second Wednesday of the month, immediately following the club's monthly meeting.

Articles posted on OPCUG's web site and published in Ottawa PC News, the club's monthly newsletter, indicate how to install, configure and run various versions of the Linux operating system, freeware, and open-source programs. We also provide lots of tips, tricks and traps associated with Linux and software applications. Some of these contributions are noted below.

Linux

Check out our material on the Linux operating system. We have how-to's on a variety of topics, a special series for the new user wishing to explore Linux, a number of book reviews - and even a movie review! - all relating to Linux. In fact, you will find almost everything you need to know about Linux on our purpose-built web page!

Free Software

Yes, some programmers really do write software and give it away absolutely free. We have reviews of some really useful freeware, and a guide to many more free programs, all with links from which you can download your very own copies. So, check out our catalogue of Free Software .

Open-Source Software

Are you especially interested in open-source programs? Do you need a free office suite, a different E-mail client, or a disk partition manager? Would you like to be able to encrypt files or entire directories? Does installing Linux as a folder in Windows appeal to you? If so, our reviews of various Open-Source Software packages are just what you need!
