Wednesday, December 12, 2012 Speaker and Silent Auction Speaker: Chris Ellis, McAfee SE Topic: Threat landscape and latest anti-malware trends (details of presentation not available - check http://opcug.ca for updates) Raffle Prize: McAfee Total Protection 2013 (to be confirmed) Silent Auction For our December meeting we are going to have a silent auction and its proceeds will be donated to the Ottawa Food Bank. All the items for sale will be displayed with a bidding sheet on which you can write your name and your bid, as many times as you want, and the highest bidders will win the items. So, if you have good stuff that you would like to donate, please send us an email with a description of what you want to donate to SilentAuction@@opcug.ca Also, we will have a box to collect your non-perishable food donations for the food bank. For those who prefer to give money, we'll have a box for that, too. Donations over $10 are tax deductible. With its food industry partnerships and bulk purchasing power, the Ottawa Food Bank turns every $1 donated into $5 worth of food. And furthermore, as if that were not enough, the OPCUG will give all the proceeds of the December raffle ticket sales to the food bank. So, in December, if you feel like helping others, you will have plenty of choices. I was contacted by the moderator of the show Entre Nous, a French-language show on Rogers TV, Ottawa, cable 23. It's a daily show, from Monday to Friday, live at 1pm. The studio is at 1810 St-Laurent boulevard. They are looking for someone who would be interested in coming on regularly on the show to do an 8-minute interview- style segment on computer-related topics similar in nature to the seminars we give at the Ottawa public library. So topics might include protecting your computer, how to buy a PC, securing home wireless networks, dealing with social media, how to prevent identity theft, housekeeping chores you should do on your computer, etc. If you can speak French and are interested in appearing on local cable TV as a computer guru, send me an email at chris.taylor@@opcug.ca and I will put you in touch with the people who run the show. ____________________________ CLASSIC MOVIES FOR FREE!! submitted by Mark Cayer The site tagline says: "Welcome to the ONLY internet movie site that allows you to: Watch and download old movies without forcing you to join anything, pay anything, or jump through any hoops before enjoying the movie . . . And does NOT force you to watch a commercial before or during the old movie - you can enjoy the movie un-cut and uninterrupted. And search for movie actors and characters and directors by name, with direct links to their movies . . ." and the website http://free-classic-movies.com does just that. Run by classic movie enthusiast Jim Berkey, affectionately known as "Jimbo", the site specializes in movies whose copyright has expired therefore placing them in the public domain. Download 'em or watch 'em on-line. A ton of old "B" movies from the 1920's to the 1970's free for the taking. ____________________________ OTTAWA PC NEWS Ottawa PC News is the newsletter of the Ottawa PC Users' Group (OPCUG), and is published monthly except in July and August.
